High-Security Electric Vehicles Could Transform Government Fleet


The U.S. Department of State has allocated a significant portion of its 2025 procurement budget to armored Teslas, with a projected spend of $400 million. This substantial investment aims to enhance security for diplomatic personnel and officials, marking a potential shift toward integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into high-security government operations. The contract is expected to be finalized by September 30, 2025, with a projected duration of five years. Tesla has not officially produced armored vehicles, but its Cybertruck has been promoted as having bullet-resistant features. CEO Elon Musk has previously mentioned that the Cybertruck can withstand small arms fire, though the company has yet to confirm production of fully armored versions. Recent sightings of the Cybertruck in former President Donald Trump’s motorcade in Texas suggest that Tesla’s vehicles are gaining recognition for security applications. This potential contract indicates growing confidence in Tesla’s technology beyond consumer markets, demonstrating the viability of electric vehicles in governmental and security-focused transportation. If finalized, it could lead to further investments in bulletproof electric vehicles for law enforcement and diplomatic security.

While Tesla stands to benefit from this multi-million-dollar deal, concerns have been raised over a potential conflict of interest. Elon Musk has been an outspoken advocate for reducing government spending, yet his company could soon secure one of the largest government contracts in its history.
